A former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has reportedly made a statement claiming that he is sure that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential candidate and his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar will be elected as president while also taking a swipe at the administration of Muhammadu Buhari, described the president’s integrity and morality as fake and unbankable.
The New Telegraph reported that the former president made this statement on Wednesday, January 30, at the Island Club 2019 Quarterly Business Lecture held in Lagos state. Obasanjo also said he has forgiven Atiku and he won’t be retracting his recent remarks on President Buhari and his government.
Recall that his son, Olajuwon who is the Coordinator of the Buhari Youth Organisation (BYO), earlier said that President Buhari’s integrity could not be faulted. According to him, Buhari believes in the youth and as such, has empowered them. He also noted that the current government is laying a solid foundation for infrastructural development.
“Buhari believes in promoting Nigerian youths which is the basis of forming this association (BYO). This government has empowered the youths to go into farming and other entrepreneurship. This government is laying a good foundation for an expanded economic base and infrastructure development.”
On whether his support for Buhari has affected his relationship with his father, Olajuwon said they are still one happy family.
“I’m here as an individual, adult, and someone who believes in this government. Politics can’t separate me and my father. We are still one loving family; our relationship is cordial. Politics is meant to unite us. It is important we rise above ethnicity, religious bigotry, and primordial sentiments.”
Some else who had someone to say about the President’s integrity is Yekini Nabena, the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He said Obasanjo who had accused Atiku of corruption tendencies had contradicted himself by turning around to declare the ‘sinner’ forgiven and qualified to govern Nigeria.
“Throughout their second tenure in office (2003-2007) and until last fortnight, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had described Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a corrupt, disloyal and unpatriotic leader who was not fit and proper to handle the mantle of Nigerian leadership. Only recently, Obasanjo vowed that God would not forgive him if he supported the presidential aspiration of Atiku as ‘it would amount to handing Nigeria over to sharks and looters.’”
“It is this tendency towards indecision, insincerity, double talk and deception that has made Nigeria ridiculed in the eyes of the international community. A statesman is known for his principles and his statements are based on the strength of his convictions,” Nabena said.
Someone else who had something to say was the coordinator of President Muhammadu Buhari/Osinbajo Support Group in Lagos State, Hon. Moshood Salvador, who predicted victory for President Buhari in the forthcoming presidential election in Nigeria.
Salvador, who was speaking at the inauguration of South West Executive Members and State Coordinators of Buhari/Osinbajo Support Group at Premier Hotel, Ibadan, Oyo State added that people believe in Buhari’s integrity and that they were ready to give him a second term.
“President Muhammadu Buhari has nothing but integrity. That is his selling point, which is why people are interested in him. A leader without integrity is nobody, my prayer is for the youth and young ones to emulate him.”
Salvador maintained, while speaking to journalists at the event, that the election would be a walk over for Buhari and Osinbajo in all the regions of the country. He added that the APC had done well both at the federal and state level.
